Terlipressin is a new synthetic long-acting vasopressin preparation. Its chemical name is triglyceride lysine vasopressin. It belongs to a precursor drug. It is inactive. After aminopeptidase is used in vivo to remove the three glycyl residues at its N-terminal, it releases the active lysine vasopressin slowly. It is this "slow release" mechanism that allows smooth muscle contraction to last up to 10 hours after a single dose, while vasopressin activity can only last 20-40 minutes at the same dose.
